Graphic Design Draft

For this assignment, I knew I wanted to create a “flyer” type thing about the benefits of having an Emotional Support Animal that I have learned through doing research on having an Emotional Support Animal before getting one myself, and now having one myself. On this flyer, I have included a few pictures of Emotional Support Animals. On the right is my best friends ESA, Lulu. She is an Aussie, Boxer, Collie mix. On the left is a picture taken by a friend of mine, Cortney Gosset, of her ESA Casper. In the middle is a picture of myself and my ESA Meeko! Lastly, found in the bottom right corner is what a certified ESA card looks like, when they are registered by the National Service Animal Registry. Surrounding the pictures and on top of a serene grass background I got from a free images website (https://www.pexels.com/photo/background-bright-close-up-environment-413195/), are short benefits of having an Emotional Support Animal. ESA’s can benefit a person in so many different ways and these are just a few of the benefits that are found when you have an ESA. Most often ESA’s are dogs but, you can register any type of animal as an ESA. According to the nsarco.com “all domesticated animals may qualify as an ESA”. There are many more benefits than listed on the photo, although I thought these were a good cover of all the different things ESA’s benefit. In addition to those previously listed, some other benefits are the support to agoraphobia, negative stress, blood pressure and immune system. Although, some of those benefits specifically for dogs. Many people just see ESA’s as a way to bring pets to school or rental properties that don’t allow pets but in all reality, you do need a doctor’s note to have a certified ESA live with you so it is not just pets for people to bring but a support system for those who need it.

  1. From Ethan Stark: One critique I have is you can better display the text in your image. The benefits could be worked into more in between your images versus just surrounding them, and I think that title stand out more from the rest of your text, i.e. bolding the text, making it larger, arching it, etc. Really, anything else to make it stand out and pop off the page. Another critique I have is to maybe increase the size of your image. Things look a little cluttered around the top of your image and would benefit if there was a little more space to work with. However, I really like how neatly you laid out your images, and the border around them looks great! I also really like the image of the hand holding the ID card, it is very well don’t and fits well in with the rest of your image. Overall, I really like this poster and I think you’re off to a great start!

  2. Overall, I really like your poster. The idea is awesome, and for a really important cause too which is awesome. The biggest improvement I think you could make is to mess with the sizes and location of your elements, like the pictures and the text, to give different things emphasis and create movement in it. For example, it might feel awkward to read the text boxes as they are because they don’t follow a path, they’re cut off by the pictures. But if all the boxes followed a similar line or pattern, it might be easier to read. I also think it feels a little cramped, so making things a bit smaller may help as well. But I like the concept, I think the pictures used are awesome, and it all works together.

  3. I feel like to improve my own work after reevaluating and reading my classmate’s feedback it would be most beneficial to me to edit my heading text and make it stand out from the rest of the benefits. Although it is at the top, which does bring attention to it, it is still the same size as the others and could benefit to stand out more. Ethan also mentioned that is looks a bit cluttered, so I will work to rearrange all of the pieces to the project to make it the most cohesive it can be. In my final version, I will be changing a few things like, the title, maybe the font, and the organization of the project, hoping that this will make it the best version it can be. I have yet to receive any feedback from the other two classmates in my group (as of 7:15pm) but, Ethan’s feedback has given me a great start to revising my project.

  4. The idea and mode work really well together, as both an informatic and advertisement of the benefits to service dogs and support dogs. I think overall the concept is well put together and only needs a few tweaks. The background jumps out at the viewer more aggressively than the rest of the images, which could easily be solved by muting its colors to something more calming to match with the theme of the post. That will also help the images pop out more and put emphasis on the text, which falls behind because it is a much more relaxed color than the other parts of the graphic. I like the image of the dog on the right, because the sunset behind her is calming and fits with the color scheme of the graphic, but the dog on the left fades into the background of his photo, which is darker in the back anyway. Cropping it and brightening it could help boost the mood of the image. Otherwise, I think the scattered text and images is fun and well balanced, and I appreciate that the only picture with a person in it is in the middle to avoid skewing the weight of the graphic. Since there are so many words, I think keeping the text designs as simple as possible while still being attractive was the right move, though maybe having a few friends read it from a distance will help make sure you have the right font and text hardness/ size.
